Description

The Photo Contest mechanics allow your users to get involved in your brand's life by creating, sharing and/or voting for content related to it. Have your users vote for photos you have previously selected, or encourage them to share their own photos and personalize them with your brand colours.

Game design

Before setting up your campaign, you must create the necessary graphic elements. Please check this article that will explain all the essential information for the graphic creation of your campaign: Creating your games graphics. To create custom elements for the Photo Contest module, please see this article: Photo Contest Module Graphics Specifications

Page setup

First, click New Campaign and then select Photo Contest. You are then in the campaign editor that includes the 5 steps of this mechanic : Form, Media Gallery, Media Upload, Thanks and end of campaign page. You can also add a teaser page and a home page. Don't forget to set up your campaign settings now, by entering the campaign dates and importing the Rules and Privacy Policy.

Background image setup

Upload your desktop wallpapers by clicking the "+" icon in Background Image. To understand the graphic specifications of the backgrounds for this module, please refer to the "Game Design" section of this article. You also have the option to add a solid background colour that will surround your game pages; you can leave the basic colour or choose to standardise your campaign with a colour that resembles your brand or game pages, for example.

Media Gallery settings

The "Media Gallery" page is used to highlight the selection of photos that you have imported or that have been added by the user via the "Media Upload" page. It is also possible to vote for one or more photos from this game screen.

There are a wide variety of options for configuring this page, so we recommend that you read this article which will provide you with a complete description of this module: Media Gallery module.

"Media Upload" settings

The "Media Upload" page is used to give the user the possibility to upload the photo(s) of his/her choice from the following sources:

  • Computer

  • Webcam

  • Facebook

It is also possible for the user to add information to best describe him/her (or even to encourage voting if your campaign rewards the best photos) and to customize it/them via various options that you can make available from the editor. There are a wide variety of options for configuring this page, so we recommend that you read this article which will provide you with a complete description of this module: Media Upload module.

Submitting a Facebook application for a Photo Contest

⚠️ Please note: Submitting a Facebook application for your photo contest requires that your campaign is fully ready and configured in the editor. Please also note that Facebook may take up to 5 business days to validate your application, but if adjustments are requested, the time may be extended.

If you want to create a photo contest with a photo upload via Facebook, you must submit your Facebook application to be allowed to do so. Indeed, you have the possibility to activate the upload via Facebook with the "Media Upload" module but it is necessary to create a Facebook application dedicated to the game and associate it with the game. Once your application has been created and added to our platform, return to Facebook Developers. Add the 1024x1024px icon of your application, the privacy policy url and the associated category in the "Settings" tab.

Once you have configured and published your Facebook application, follow these steps:

  • Go to the "App Review" section, then click on "Permissions and features".

  • Select "user_photos" then click on "Request".

  • Complete the authorization form requests: you will need to explain and describe precisely the user's experience with their photos, and how they will use them. Also complete the steps in the "Complete app and parameter check" section.

In the free field that appears, you must describe step by step the user path of your game in English and accurately. Choose "Web" for the question about the platform concerned.

Example :

  1. Fill in the fields “Last name”, “First name”, “Email” of the form.

  2. Click on the blue button “Play”

  3. Click on the blue button “Publish my picture”

  4. Click on the facebook icon and then select a photo from your facebook account

  5. Complete the fields “Name” and “Description” of the photo

  6. Click on the blue button “Validate”

  7. Click on the blue button “See the gallery” to see your picture publish in the gallery

Once these elements are completed, take a video of all these steps as if you were a user who wants to participate in your game (You can download the Licecap software to make your registration). Convert it to.mp4 version and upload it. Click on save.

In the "Complete app and settings verification" section, you have the option to add a Test App, Test User and test credentials for the Facebook team - however, all this is optional. Once all these steps have been completed, send your request by clicking on "Check app".

From there, there are 2 options:

  • If you have a Business Manager account and have linked it to your application, the process is completed and the test results of your application will be sent to you within about 5 days.

  • If you do not have a Business Manager account, Facebook will ask you to sign 2 contracts after checking your application, and before sending you the results. The entire process can take up to 10 days before your application is validated.

Example without Business Manager account

Sharing the uploaded photo on Facebook

To encourage voting and recruiting new participants, you can make sure that the photo the user uploaded is shared on Facebook, via the "Facebook Sharing" widget.

How to do this:

  • Install the "Facebook sharing" widget on the "Thanks" page from the Social Widgets tab.

  • Select your Facebook application for this campaign from the drop-down list, or create one.

  • Choose the type of image in "Dynamic Image".

  • Add the variable %mediaUploadD3_dynamic_image_1% as an "associated variable".

  • As an option, you can also customize the title and description of the share or let the user do it himself.

Please note that in the case of multiple uploads from the user, this will only show the last uploaded photo.

Mobile setup

Once your Desktop Campaign is set up, you need to switch to Mobile view to import the chosen backgrounds and format the different pages to support it. To import mobile wallpapers, follow the same procedure as for desktop wallpapers.

Please note that on Mobile, the upload buttons are replaced by an upload zone, triggering either the addition of a photo via your photo library, or the taking of a photo via your camera.

Campaign launch and test

Once the desktop and mobile versions have been finalized, you can publish the campaign. Don't forget to check your campaign.

Examples of Photo Contest campaigns

Kiabi uses Adictiz Box to organize its annual model casting, internally and externally: users are invited to post one or more photos of themselves by filling in their profile, size etc. and before inviting their entourage to vote for them.

Legrand engages its community during the summer period with a photo contest around its products: users are invited to upload a photo or a decorative idea with a Legrand lighting product.

Picwic engages its parent community around the sports theme to highlight its partnership with Kidizoom children's cameras: users are invited to post a photo of their child during a sports activity to participate in the draw.

Lidl mediatizes its range of products for dogs & cats in partnership with its Coshida & Orlando brands: users are invited to post a photo of their furball and personalize it with scripted stickers to participate in the draw.

Q&A

Do photos using a specific # automatically go up in the game's photo gallery?

It depends on the dissemination tool. If you want to publish a photo contest with a specific # on Twitter, any user from his Twitter account who uses this hashtag for a photo will see this photo going up in the photo gallery of your marketing game. On the other hand if the user makes the same step on Instagram, the photo will not go up for the moment in the photo gallery of our platform. Thus, the hashtag works for the moment only with Twitter but not with Instagram. This feature will be developed in the near future.
